You may think that taking care of your hair means just shampooing regularly, but there’s a bit more to it to that. Different people have different types of hair and each type of hair requires distinct care, not to mention responding differently to styling techniques. You should know your hair type to take proper care of your hair and be able to style it in a way that can complement your look and make you more beautiful.

In general terms, hair can be categorized into straight, wavy and curly, and it can also be thick or thin. The curl pattern of different types of hair differs and it depends on the hair follicle. If the follicle is oval then you will have curly hair, for example.

The products you use for each type of hair is different. When it comes to styling, a particular style may not be perfect for your hair and may not look the same on you as it does on someone with a different hair type. So, no matter how much you like Angelina Jolie’s new haircut, for example, it may not look good on you unless you have the same hair type as she does.

Straight

Straight hair doesn’t have any natural curls. Straight hair should be regularly shampooed with a mild shampooed, and then conditioned with a conditioner for straight hair. Straight hair is particularly prone to tangles, so be sure to gently comb through with your rinse-out or leave-in conditioner. Never brush straight hair when wet, as this can cause breakage.

When it comes to styling, a blunt chin cut usually looks phenomenal on straight hair. Straight hair tends to be thin and the blunt cut makes the hair appear thicker. However, if you have thicker hair, you are best to include layers. If you want to blow dry your hair, use a round brush to add more volume.

Wavy

People with wavy hair have straight hair from the root to around eye level. Beyond that point, the hair becomes wavy. Some people have undefined curls, whereas others have defined s-shaped curls. The waves are your asset, so you should accentuate them. If you use oily products then the curls will flatten, so always try to use non-oily hair products.

Wavy hair tends to be frizzy, so you should use a moisturizing shampoo to reduce the frizz. You can also use a moisturizing hair mask a couple of times a week and use hair oil to keep your hair hydrated. To keep your waves in good shape you can use gel or hair mousse on wet hair. Whatever styling you do on your wavy hair, try to fix the waves with a hair spray. A layered hair cut will look good on thin wavy hair as it will add volume. For thicker hair, let your hair grow longer, so your waves will be more visible.

Curly

When we talk about curly hair, we’re actually referring to several different hair types. Some curly hair forms loose loops and the circumference of the curls can vary from person to person. If you have curly hair, you shouldn’t pull your hair back and have it in a ponytail or a bun for hours and hours. This will cause the curls to lose its shape and can also cause hair falls.

If your hair has spiral-like curls, then you shouldn’t comb your hair too often. Instead, apply a leavve-in conditioner and use your fingers to detangle and tame your hair. The curlier your hair is, the more fragile it will be: use coconut oil to make the hair stronger.

Frizz is the biggest enemy of curly hair. It can be a challenge to control the frizz, so you have to keep your hair well-moisturized. Moisturizing shampoos and conditioners specifically designed for curly hair types like House of Curls are ideal. A short hairstyle is great for curly hair as it will make your curls stand out. You can also lock your curls in with hair spray or gel.

Thin hair

If your hair is thin, you should wash it frequently as this hair type is particularly prone to attracting dirt. Volunmizing mousse can also be helpful to give your hair more body. You should never use conditioner on the scalp as it will make your hair look limp and greasy: only condition the ends of your hair.

If you have thin and curly hair, then point cutting will make your hair look amazing: this creates a softness towards the tips and makes your hair look voluminous. If you have thin, straight hair, layers will add fullness to your hair. You can add hair extension clips to make your hair look thicker.

Thick hair

Thick hair tends to be drier, so it is important to keep it hydrated. You can use hair oil to keep your hair moisturized and coconut and argan oils are good options. You can also use a hair mask to control dryness. Look for a mask for thick hair or you can also make your own hair mask at home using avocado, honey and other ingredients easily found in your kitchen. The problem with thick hair is that it is difficult to manage and adding layers to your hair can make it more manageable.

Thick hair suits a variety of styles: from braids to half-up styles, everything looks good on thick hair. Try to use styling products less frequently as they contain chemicals that can damage your hair. Heat can also damage your hair, so avoid blow-drying too often.
