3. Nighttime Yoga Will Calm You Down

High-intensity exercise can make you feel more energetic. This is great during the day, but at night, you want to feel relaxed and ready to sleep. If you pick the right yoga flow, it will still provide physical and mental health benefits, but without waking you up.

Certain yoga flows focus more on flexibility and static movements rather than higher-intensity fast-paced sequences. You’ll feel nice and limber when you’re done and it will feel great to get under your sheets.

4. It’s Great for Flexibility

How’s your flexibility? If you’re like most people, it’s probably not very good. People who work desk jobs and live otherwise sedentary lifestyles often have incredibly tight hips and hamstrings.

If you’ve always wanted to get more flexible, yoga is a great way to do it. There are yoga flows for the hips, hamstrings, shoulders, and so much more. Some people even use yoga to achieve their splits. 

Flexibility takes time, but it’s worth it. If you’re flexible now, you’ll have better mobility in the future.  

5. You Can Build Strength

When people think of building strength, they usually don’t think of using yoga to do it. This is a mistake! Yoga is a great exercise for building a moderate amount of strength (depending on the types of yoga flows you do). 

Some yoga poses are incredibly difficult without a good amount of strength, such as the crow pose. It requires wrist, arm, and core strength.

Even doing a simple vinyasa flow requires core strength and upper body strength. You’ll find it challenging to go through a vinyasa after a tough upper body and abs workout!

You might not get a 6-pack from doing yoga, but you will build muscle. If the poses are getting easier, it means you’re getting stronger. 

6. It Can Help You Maintain a Healthy Weight

Many people struggle to maintain a healthy weight. They may find it challenging to work out and eat within a reasonable calorie range. It’s harder than it seems!

Yoga isn’t usually a serious calorie burner (though there are some exceptions). That said, it does still burn calories. Faster-paced yoga routines and special yoga styles, like hot yoga, will make the calorie burn even higher.

Even if you’re only burning 100 calories with yoga if you combine that with a calorie deficit in your diet, you’ll be making a big difference. Yoga is also incredibly sustainable. You can do it every day, even if you’re feeling sore (though, of course, be mindful). 

7. It’s Great for Exercise Recovery

Speaking of soreness, yoga is fantastic for exercise recovery. 

Anyone who works out heavily knows that DOMS can be a serious pain. You need to take rest days to soothe your sore muscles and allow time for growth, but you don’t want to be completely sedentary. Moving your body will ease the soreness.

This is where yoga comes into play. When you do yoga, you’re participating in active rest. You’re working out, but you’re not causing further damage to your muscles.

Just make sure your yoga flow of choice isn’t too focused on the muscles that are sore.
